Carbon is a naturally occurring by-product in a combustion engine, it looks like a coating of black soot. 

Many things, like contaminants found in lower grade petrol and diesel such as supermarket fuels, a vehicle running a rich fuel/air mixture, oil leaks, and short trip driving can lead to excessive carbon build up and really cause you problems.

This build up can lead to: Decreased mpg, excessive emissions, hesitation, lack of power, stalling and poor acceleration because carbon build up on vehicle sensors affects the signals sent to the engine management, which can lead to further carbon build up.
